Prsidential Liars

The other day I began to wonder what it is about the U.S. Presidency that causes the office holder to become a liar - at least a mis-informer. W has almost begun to tell the truth about Iraq after leading us into that mess with lies about WMD's. Bill Clinton became well known for his statement "I did not have sex with that woman." Southern boy believes that "sex" is coitus and not fellatio. Regan kept us in the dark about the Iran-Contra affair as long as he could. Even Eisenhower lied to the Russians about the over-flight of spy planes until one was brought down over Soviet territory. Do you suppose that we will every be able to elect a thoroughly honest person as President? Not that many of us ordinary citizens would meet that standard.

Maybe they should change the oath of office: " I promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me."

The real question is: would you want a truly and universally, without exception honest man in the oval office? Would you want eisenhower to tell the Russians about the U2 planes?

And where was Jimmy Carter's big lie?

1 The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king."

2 But Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me."

The LORD said, "Take a heifer with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.' 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate."

4 Samuel did what the LORD said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, "Do you come in peace?"
