When was the last time you changed the batteries in your smoke/carbon monoxide alarm? I hadn’t thought about that for a long time. If someone had asked me I would say that it probably needed changing, but I didn’t have a 9-volt battery handy. A few years ago I had bought a combination smoke/monoxide detector and installed it just outside the gas furnace and near the downstairs bedroom. (That is where I am sleeping now since the bedroom upstairs still contains to many memories.) Around 4:30 a.m. I heard a strange sound and could not place it. Cats? What? It was sort of: “sptt, blabber, blabber” , and no yowling followed. I finally got out of bed and began to explore and listen more carefully. Turned out to be the Alarm saying “low battery”. I took it off the wall and removed - not a 9 volt, but 3 double A’s. I thought to go on back to bed and became concerned that the thing wouldn’t be any good without batteries in case something unfortunate happened. I did have a package of double A’s so went upstairs, got them, and things are now back in quiet working order. I guess that I finally got back to sleep since I didn’t get up again until 7 a.m.
I guess I can be thankful for an expensive, talkative wall fixture.

I am thankful too!
What will they think of next? Our smoke alarm is wired into our house and never needs batteries. But I suppose it wouldn't hurt to test it onece in a while.
