It was interesting to read in today’s paper that cousin Zachary was inaugurated as President of the United States on this date in 1849. Back in those days inauguration was set for March 4th, but that being a Sunday it was delayed to Monday. According to my Reunion software President Taylor is a first cousin four time removed. We are both direct decendents of The Rev. Rowland Taylor of Rothbury, England who was born 10/6/1510, and who died a martyrs death in Feb. 1555 under the reign of Bloody Mary. Known to his troops as “Old Rough and Ready”, General Taylor was a major figure in the war with Mexico which resulted in the addition of Texas to the Union. He was nominated by the Whigs. Millard Fillmore was his Vice President, and was probably less well prepared to be President that Taylor. The Party refused to nominate him for President the next time around.
So much for history.
